MUSICA FLOREA
Artistic director & conductor Marek ŠTRYNCL
Supraphon is issuing the world premiere recording of previously-unknown sacred music from the archive in Kroměříž by the important Czech Baroque composer Pavel Josef Vejvanovský (ca. 1640-93), who was head of the palace music ensemble of the Bishop of Olomouc, Karel Lichtenstein-Castelcorno, in Kroměříž starting in 1670. This composer, very educated for his time, prolific, well-rounded, and stylistically progressive, makes plentiful use of effective brass instruments, especially trumpets. An important role in the recording is also played by the captivatingly-colorful and transparently-pure boys' choir. The disc is full of contrasts: richly-textured vocal-instrumental music is interspersed with ascetic antiphons that lend the recording a mystical, religious effect. Along with distinguished soloists and the boys' choir, Musica Florea and its artistic director and conductor Marek Štryncl assure first-class artistic quality and a historically-informed stylistic conception.
