Supraphon discovers an important unknown composer!
Few lovers of good music have any concrete association with the name Josef Leopold Dukát (1684-1717), but this prematurely-deceased Czech contemporary of Bach was a virtuoso composer, and was the first and for a long time the only composer on Czech territory who was bold enough to tackle the challenging genre of the solo church cantata. The score of the cantata collection Cithara nova from 1707 was long regarded as having been lost when the Communists liquidated the Želiv Monastery in 1950, and it was not rediscovered until the 1990s. This is the world premiere recording of this collection!
The high technical and expressive quality of Dukát's music is a pleasant surprise for us, and the success of the recording is bolstered by the excellent early music ensemble Musica Florea and the vocal soloists, especially the outstanding Austrian countertenor Markus Forster.
